  44. This file describes the updated APPLETLK.NLM software (v3.06), including
  45. new fixes and enhancements. This NLM is compatible with the AppleTalk
  46. Support Package v3.0 or later and NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 or later.

  48. GENERAL NOTE
  49.  
  50. Periodically, Novell provides patches and software updates to correct
  51. problems in its software products. Before you apply a Novell patch or
  52. update, take a moment to read the accompanying release notes and verify
  53. that the software you plan to update is the correct version.

  56. IMPORTANT NOTE: THE APPLETLK.NLM v3.06 SHOULD NOT BE USED WITH THE NETWARE
  57. MULTIPROTOCOL ROUTER
  58.  
  59. The APPLETLK.NLM v3.06, or any previous versions of this NLM that are
  60. included in NetWare for Macintosh or the Appletalk Support Package,
  61. *cannot* be used to replace the APPLETLK NLM in the MultiProtocol Router.
  62. This is because the APPLETLK.NLM v3.1 in the MultiProtocol Router has WAN
  63. capabilities that are not supported by the APPLETLK NLM v3.06.

  66. that product's documentation.

  69. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  70.  
  71. Follow these instructions to install APPLETLK.NLM for NetWare for Macintosh
  72. or the AppleTalk Support Package:
  73.  
  74. 1. Rename the old APPLETLK.NLM in the SYS:SYSTEM directory so that it will
  75. not be overwritten when you install the new NLM. For example, you can call
  76. it "APPLETLK.OLD."
  77.  
  78. 2. Copy the new APPLETLK.NLM to the server's SYS:SYSTEM directory.
  79.  
  80. 3. Down the server by issuing the DOWN command at the server console and
  81. then reboot the server. (Or reload APPLETLK.NLM using the command-line
  82. options described in your documentation.)

  86. NEW FEATURES AND FIXES IN APPLETLK.NLM v3.06
  87.  
  88. This section describes updates and fixes to both the AppleTalk router and
  89. to the AppleTalk protocol stack.
  90.  
  91. UPDATES TO THE APPLETALK ROUTER:
  92.  
  93. Problem 1: In the previous release of APPLETLK.NLM, the sender's network
  94. number in the first two bytes of the RTMP data portion was byte-swapped in
  95. all but the first packet of responses that required more than one packet.
  96.  
  97. Symptom: On a Phase 1 network, it was possible for a node that learns its
  98. network number by broadcasting RTMP requests to be dynamically configured
  99. with the wrong network number.
  100.  
  101. Resolution: The sender's network number is now set correctly when multiple
  102. RTMP data packets are sent in response to an RTMP route data request.
  103.

  105. Problem 2: In earlier releases of APPLETLK.NLM, the last zone name of one
  106. reply packet and the first zone name of a subsequent reply packet for a
  107. multi-packet reply could be duplicated if routes without zones appeared in
  108. the routing table.
  109.  
  110. Symptom: Duplicate zones names sometimes appeared in the Chooser.
  111.  
  112. Resolution: This problem is fixed.
  113.  
  114.  
  115. Problem 3: BIND or LOAD commands could fail.
  116.  
  117. Symptoms: BIND and LOAD commands could fail when zone names included
  118. leading, trailing, and embedded spaces, or when certain keywords were used
  119. in the BIND or LOAD line command
  120.  
  121. Resolution: BIND and LOAD commands that use zone names with leading,
  122. trailing, and embedded spaces are now allowed. LOAD and BIND commands with
  123. LOAD or BIND command line keywords are allowed. However, zone names that
  124. include leading and trailing spaces are *not* supported on the LOAD command
  125. line.

  128. Problem 4: The router sometimes responded to Echo protocol requests by
  129. setting the source net number field in the response packet to the
  130. requesting node's net number instead of its own net number.
  131.  
  132. Symptom: The destination router sometimes responded with the requesting
  133. node's network number.
  134.  
  135. Resolution: The AppleTalk router now responds correctly to Echo requests.
  136.

  138. UPDATES TO THE APPLETALK PROTOCOL STACK:
  139.  
  140. Problem 1: Some users reported difficulties maintaining idle ADSP
  141. connections.
  142.  
  143. Symptom: In the previous release of the APPLETLK.NLM, applications such as
  144. NetWare for SAA, NetWare SQL, and some third-party applications could lose
  145. their ADSP connections if the application did not receive transmitted data
  146. after a couple of minutes. For example, a backup application lost its ADSP
  147. connection to the Macintosh during the time it took to change a tape
  148. cartridge on the backup device.
  149.  
  150. Resolution: This problem is resolved.
  151.

  153. Problem 2: AFP sessions hanging under certain limited conditions.
  154.  
  155. Symptom: In the previous release of APPLETLK.NLM, an ASP ATP request was
  156. checked to determine that it came from the correct remote endpoint. If this
  157. check failed for any reason, AppleTalk disregarded subsequent requests,
  158. causing the AFP session to hang.
  159.  
  160. Resolution: Now AFP will not hang under the above conditions.
